photo in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, 5/Jul/2009

Two Siberian flying squirrels (Pteromys volans) were in a bird house which was built for bird reproduction research.

European Sparrowhawk chicks

Photo in Tomakomai, Hokkaido. 01/Jul/2009

My friend found an European Sparrowhawk's (Accipiter nisus) nest which contained five chicks in the nest.

After three days we took this photo, we went to this place again.
There was no chicks in the nest, they had already fledging.
But we saw the parents and heard the voice of chicks (I thought), so the fledglings were stayed nearby yet.

Sea Birds from the ship

During the whale watching, I watched birds of of course.

A Rhinoceros Auklet was very close to the ship flying away from our ship.

We also saw Several Fulmars, but most people neglected this bird species.

The others seabirds we saw were gulls, such as Black-tailed Gull and Slaty-backed Gull.

Althouh I wanted to see sheawaters, albatrosses, and skuas, foggy condition prevented us from going further out to the sea.

Whale watching in Muroran

I went to Muroran and rode on whale watching ship.
I obserbed several hundreds of Pacific White-sided Dolphin (Lagenorhynchus obliquidens) .

They assembled to our ship and took us services; jumping and riding waves in front of us.
Unfortunately, it was fog in offshore, so we could'nt see other whales.

Muroran is an industrial and harbor city.
Dolphins are able to be obserbed from shore when luck is on our side.

Laxman's shrew

Photo in Tomakomai, Hokkaido. 11/Jul/2009
Laxman's shrew (Sorex caecutiens) is second-big shrew in Hokkaido (the biggest is Long-clawed shrew).
An alike shrew lives in Honshu,Shinto Shrew (Sorex shinto) which was regarded to be the same species, but they were divided by molecular research recently.
Because the photos were taken under cloudy condition, shutter speed was not so high and it is difficult to get a good photos to me.
