Shearwaters

Buller's Shearwater was one of main target of this cruise.

It was often sleeping.

"I'm sleepy"

Flesh-footed Shearwater.

Another target was Red-legged Kittiwake. Although we searched flock of Kittiwake one by one, no one contained...

Yagishiri

I went to Yagishiri and Teuri island to see birds migration.

Unfortunately, migration was later than usual, not many birds were observed.

Generally, I went to only Teuri island, changing of pace, I was forward to Yagishiri island before arriving Teuri in one day, the ferry was twice in a day.

Red-flanked Bluetail was only migration bird taken photos in Yagishiri island.....

Food of Slaty-backed Gulls

I observed feeding of Slaty-backed Gulls.

 A Large-billed Crow ate Sea Urchin, a Slaty-backed Gull aimed it.

 After leaving the crow, it got it.

 A woman threw bulk of fish which she didn't eat, Large-billed Crow and Slaty-backed Gulls began to scramble.

 An individual ate crab.

Other individual ate seaweed.

End of the year in Eastern Hokkaido -Nemuro-

Shika Deer.

In 31th, I drove around Nemuro.
I herd Shore Lark in Syunkunitai, but I couldn't find...

In northern Hokkaido, some of sea birds can be observe in fishery port at short range.

Black-throated Diver (right) and Pacific Diver (left) were observed at the same time.

End of the year in Eastern Hokkaido -Notuke-

I went to Eastern Hokkaido 30th and 31th Decenmber.

In 30th, I went to Notuke. There were many eagles around at short range.

White-tailed Eagle.

Steller's Sea Eagle.

White-tailed Eagle juvenile.

Steller's Sea Eagles fed on dead fish.

Eagles on the electric pole.

I found many adult Stellers' but small number of juvenile.
I suspected that reproduction of Steller's in reporoduction area (Russian far east) was not good condition.

 Common Redpole.
I saw flock of its containing ca. 15 individuals.

The purpose of coming to this place was Gyrfalcon which came sometime came this place, but there were none of it in this season.

The snow fell at near evening.

Slaty-backed Gull juvenile.

After sunset, I moved to the spot of Brlakiston's Fish Owl and waited to appear where.
We will be able to see of it for outing nest to feeding place flying above us about once at evening.
But it appeared other point waiting me, a Belgium saw flying away above him...

I was billeted in minshuku Furen which was famous among foreign birders for English speaking host.
This day, American and Belgium (the person seeing the owl) family stayed.

Stealer Sea......not Eagle

Stealer Sea Lions stay at sea of Japan coast in Hokkaido.
They come to Hokkaido to feed on fish from Kuril Islands, Aleutian islands, and Alaska etc in spring season.

Japanese eat a lot of fish, sea lions also eat huge amount of fish, so fisherman have trouble with Sea Lions.

The removal of Sea Lions is performed, although it is close extinction and protected in Russia and the US.

I went to two rest sites of them in Ishikari.

One individual rested in this spot.
Bended steel stick is ruin of fence to prevent sea lion landing, but it is too fragile for sea lions.

Another place was also a male stayed.

Coraborat with Slaty-backed Gull and Japanese Cormorant.

I went this place last year, there were over 40 individuals.

I saw landed Harlequin Ducks near the sea lion's cay.

Saunder's Gull

I saw Saunder's Gull at Osatu-numa.
This is a rare species in Japan and endangered extinction.
It is very rare case to be seen in Hokkaido.

This individual ate an object close to me, but the focus....

Daikoku island

I went to Daikoku island which was desert island in Muroran for help of research.

Many Slaty-backed Gull (Larus schistisagus) bleed in the island.

Most f chicks were able to dive into sea, but some of them couldn't yet.

There is lighthouse which don't run in this island.
