Redshank and more

A Common Redshank, though it bleeds in eastern Hokkaido, it is seen central Hokkaido scarcely, was in Mukawa, it was my first time to see here. I've seen it  about 8 year ago in Okinawa.

It fed on unknown things.

Cruise in Tomakomai

I organized cruise in Tomakomai last Sunday.

The weather was not so good, strong wind postponed the cruise on Saturday and swayed on Sunday.

I observed interesting action of Rhinoceros Auklet: two individuals stretched their neck each other, I thought it was their display. No one knew the display of it in crew, it was strange behavior.

Brünnich's Guillemot also was seen two individual-flock as like pair.
But they doesn't bleed in Japan. Are they no-bleeding pairs?

Pacific diver was seen not only at short range but heard its voice. It was my first time to listen its voice.

Short-tailed Shearwater.

Phalaropes are main target in this season, confer this and this entries last year.
We hoped tens thousands of Phalaropes, but only hundreds of them stayed around this area. And Red Phalarope was absent. I think timing of migration delayed compared to annual.

Teuri island

There were not so many migration birds in Teuri island,too.

At first, Spotted Seals and Japanese Cormorants.

Many Gold Crest and vast Dusky Thrush (I didn't take photo) were observed....

 Northern Wryneck sang several place.

Latham's Snipe bleeds in this island.

This was only my lifer: Greater Short-toed Lark with a subspecies of White Wagtail ocularis.

Chinese Merganser and Goledn-crowned Sparrow

On my way going back to Sapporo via Tokyo, I had enough time of birding in Kanto (around Tokyo), I tried to seek three stray birds I got information.

At first I went to Sagami river, Kanagawa prefecture for Chinese Merganser which lived in north east Russia and Chinese.

A young male Chinese Marganser was in flock of Common Merganser.
I heard it is difficult to see because it flew away to up or downstream constantly, so I was lucky.
After observation its floating water they flew away to downstream.

Soon I moved to Edo river, Chiba prefecture to see Red-breasted Frycatcher and Goledn-crowned Sparrow.

I could see Red-breasted Frycatcher easily but Goledn-crowned Sparrow didn't appear easily.

Common Coot.

"no-tail"Long-tailed Tit caught a bug.

I beared until appearing of it. It was seen before my deadline...

End season of shore birds

I went to Ishikari to see shore birds.
Usually shore birds decrease in this season, but I saw many species.
Bar-tailed Godwit, Spotted Redshank, Greenshank, Red-necked Stint and as follow.

There were many Sharp-tailed Sandpipers in the Artificial pond.

I saw over 10 individuals.
It was my first time to see multiple Sharp-taileds.

Black-bellied Plover.

Marsh Sandpiper.

Wood Sandpiper.

Long-billed Dowitcher.

One day trip to Tokachi

After cruise, I went to Atuma to see Spoon-billed Sandpiper I saw it last day.
Tobias wanted to see it.
But I couldn't find.

Next day, we went to Tokachi because my friend found Spoon-billed at there.

We arrived 12:00, my friend found it 11:00.
But we couldn't find...
We had to go back to Tomakomai at 18:00, so we leaved Tokachi at 14:00.

Mukawa

I went to Mukawa to see shore birds.

At first I found Pectoral Sandpiper in flock of Red-necked Stint.

It is first time to see this bird.

In the same flock, there were 2 Temminck's Stint.

 A Red-necked Phalarope, it was interesting its on land.

I moved to Atuma, on the way to next shore birds spot, young Northern Goshawk perched on tree. I was with Senzaki brothers, he told me it was first male juvenile.

In Atuma I saw flock of Black-tailed Godwi consisting 50 individuals.

 Some individuals pecked plant, probably they eat bugs.

3 Curlew Sandpipers was in assemblage of waders containing Red-necked Stint, Long-toed Stint, Broad-billed Sandpiper and Dunlin at harbor in Atuma.

It was satisfying day for shore birds.

At evening my friend came to Tomakomai ferry terminal from Hachinohe by ferry to sea sea birds, but he couldn't see sea birds well.
I lead him Atuma to see Curlew.
After dinner, I send him the ferry terminal he went back to Tokyo by ferry. Off course, he would see sea birds. Good luck.
